How to dive Los Roques from Caracas

This page answers the question dive forums and travel directories have been linking to for years: how do you get from Caracas to Los Roques to go diving, what does a dive day cost, what certification do you need, and who do you email in English to book it.

Getting there

Los Roques is an archipelago roughly 150 km north of La Guaira on Venezuela's central coast. The only practical way in is by air — small aircraft fly from Caracas (CCS) to Gran Roque's airstrip, a flight of about 45 minutes. Luggage is weighed and limited because the aircraft are small; check the current allowance with the airline or with us before you pack. There is a park entry fee payable on arrival at Gran Roque. For the full step-by-step, read our field note on getting to Los Roques.

What a dive day costs

A single dive is $35 (archived rate card, January 2012); a two-tank day is $65. Three-day and five-day blocks reduce the per-dive cost. Packages that include the flight from Caracas, a posada with breakfast and dinner, tanks, weights, a certified guide and two boat dives a day start at $270 for a two-day, one-night package (midweek, diver rate). See the full rate card for every figure, dated and footnoted. Current prices come by email — the archived card is what we can verify, not what we charge today.

What certification you need

None, for a first dive. The Discover Scuba experience runs a two-hour briefing and one supervised dive for $130 (archived). Certification starts at the Open Water Diver course — four days, five dives, $350 (archived). For the deeper sites (La Guaza at 35 m, La Piedra Ahogada at 30 m+) and for the south barrier, you should be an Advanced Open Water Diver or higher. See the course ladder for every step.

Who to email in English

Write to [email protected] with your dates, the number of divers, your certification level and whether you need lodging. We answer from Gran Roque, usually the same day. There is no booking form and no account on this site — everything is by email.

Who runs this

Ecobuzos is a PADI 5-Star Dive Resort and DAN-affiliated dive operation working the reefs of Los Roques National Park from Gran Roque. This site is the operation's own record of that water: the six sites we dive, the two boats we run, the course ladder, and what each of those costs.

Numbers that come from an instrument or an operations log — depth, tank rack capacity, engine horsepower, departure times — are stated as measured, next to the figure. Numbers that come from published research name the study and its authors. Rates and boat specifications inherited from the operation's original site (archived 2002–2013) are marked archived and dated, and the date is the year of the last archived capture of that specific page — not the year the site closed.

Corrections and updates: [email protected]. Every correction that changes a published number is logged with its date at the foot of the page.
